40 Years

Founded by Peter Gabriel, The WOMAD (the “World of Music, Arts & Dance”) experience has been successfully hosted in over 30 countries and to an audience of millions. It is one of the longest and most respected cultural festivals in the world and celebrates 40 years of existence in 2022.

To celebrate this milestone and to establish this iconic brand in South Africa, a series of unique and intimate boutique showcase events will be presented around the country and known as the WOMAD South African Safari 2022.

The Safari serves as the “ROAD TO WOMAD 2023” and is a “Teaser” for the larger scale WOMAD Festivals to be held in 2023.

Besides being renowned as a cultural “Voyage of Discovery”, one of WOMAD’s outstanding achievements has been to create a family friendly environment, and to capture a very diverse and broad audience, thus enhancing social cohesion, cross-cultural awareness and tolerance.

Post COVID, the timing is perfect for WOMAD to play a vital and inspiring role in the rejuvenation of the cultural sector in South Africa.

WOMAD’s cornerstones are job creation, cultural tourism, awareness of human rights, skills transfer programs, collaborations and recording sessions between International and Local artists and the identification of emerging artists for the world stage.
