Hubert Laws is an American flutist and saxophonist with a career spanning over 50 years in jazz, classical, and other music genres. Laws is one of the few classical artists who has also mastered jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues genres, moving effortlessly from one repertory to another. He has three Grammy nominations.
The UCT Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Brandon Phillips (Head of Woodwind and Ensembles) was founded in 1912 and has an illustrious history of talented alumni. This state-of-the-art facility contains the 160-seat Chisholm Recital Room; an opera studio, the Fiasconaro Room; nearly 100 teaching studios and practising rooms; and the W.H. Bell Music Library, which houses a range of reference and text books, periodicals, scores and records.
In addition there are recording and electronic music studios and a listening laboratory. This partnership between WOMAD SA, Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation and Eastern Acoustics presents this unique one-off concert as part of the Desmond Tutu 40 Year celebration of the Nobel Peace Prize.
