WOMAD Celebrates

Our Heritage

The WOMAD Cape Town festivities take off over the Heritage Day Weekend (23 to 25) with the V & A Waterfront changing into a colourful Kaleidoscope with free concerts by a selection of exciting global and local artists. There’s something for every arts fan with a broad spectrum of music and dance performances and a Buskers Showcase on offer over the full three days. This culturally rich and diverse program will be presented at the Amphitheatre, Ferryman’s Tavern, Ferryman’s Guinness Lounge, Quay Four and in areas within the V & A precinct.

Interactive workshops (26 to 29) by international musicians will be held in Kronendal, Ottery, Wynberg, and the Ubuntu Centre in Noordhoek. Langa’s 100 Year Anniversary will be celebrated at the Langa Theatre and Bridges Music Academy.

Coming at you from the heart of the Bokaap, Mansoor and his band presents a broad selection of Cape Town music styles including ghoema, Kaapse Klopse and Cape jazz.

Legendary West African griot renowned as the “Jimi Hendrix of the Kora” who sings in his native Mandinga and Wolof languages as well as in French. He is joined by an incredible traditional percussionist.

“Indigenous Artists Concert”

Featuring Ernestine Dean, Shellie Morris & Yarnumamalya Ayangkidarrba-langwa (Australia), King Kapisi (New Zealand), Eufronio “Kech” Sanchez (Bolivia) & DRMNGNOW [Australia).
Enlightening and spiritual, this opening ceremony and concert welcomes these special artists to our shores. Includes SAN, Aboriginal song and dance, sacred songs and pan flute music from the Andes mountains.

These Master drummers and musicians from the National Gugak Centre in Seoul are dedicated to preserving and promoting the age-old traditional melodies and rhythms of samulnori, a percussion performance assembled with four instruments: Swae, Janggoo, Buk, and Jing. Their final performance will include guest percussionists from Cape Town.

“The Beating Heart of Cape Town Hip Hop & Rap”

Featuring local hero YoungstaCPT. Known for incorporating details about his Cape Malay culture and his Cape Town roots in his music, YoungstaCPT has been described as “one of the most outspoken South African emcees of this generation”. He is joined by rappers Bravo Le Roux, Mr Heinz from the On the Blocc stable as well as the “world premier” of his collaboration with Australian superstar DRMNGNOW.

“Beyond Words”

Through immersive storytelling and music, this concert takes the audience on a journey that celebrates the artists’ heritage, migration stories, and profound connections to the continent of Africa. Includes Zimbabwean-born artist NIASHA, South African-born artist Ceeko, African American giant Craig Calhoun collaborating with Zimbabwean guitarist Sylent Nqo, and the newly formed band Tamvela.
