!KHWA TTU HERITAGE FESTIVAL
The !Khwa ttu Heritage Day Festival 2023 Celebrates San Culture and Introduces an Exciting Partnership with WOMAD.
The annual Heritage Day Festival returns to !Khwa ttu, the non-profit Heritage Centre in Yzerfontein which celebrates the San culture, on Sunday 24th September 2023. This vibrant event has become a beloved platform for South Africans to connect with their heritage and revel in the rich traditions of the San people on the picturesque Weskus.
!Khwa ttu invites the public to join them in celebrating the “San Spirit Shared” ethos during the festival. Visitors can immerse themselves in the unique San culture and experience a day filled with diverse activities and entertainment for the whole family.
The festival’s highlights include local wine and beer tastings, mouthwatering culinary experiences, herbal tea tastings, captivating San storytelling, tractor rides, traditional dancing, and interactive drumming. This year, attendees will be treated to the musical talents of San dance groups including Dizu Plaaitjies, a renowned traditional musician, as well as the mesmerizing beats of Drumba Drumming.
The 2023 Heritage Festival marks an exciting milestone as !Khwa ttu proudly partners with WOMAD (World of Music & Dance) for the first time. Originally founded by Peter Gabriel in 1982 and presented in 32 countries to an audience of millions since then, this highly respected global institution brings together artists and performers from various corners of the globe, offering diverse programming and a positive social impact.
The festival will be a spiritual celebration uniting Indigenous and First Nations including Shellie Morris & Yarnumamalya Ayangkidarrba-langwa (Australia), Eufronio “Kech” Sanchez (Bolivia), Gabriella Ghermandi (Italy/Ethiopia), N’Faly Kouyate’ (Guinea) and others from New Zealand, Canada and the USA along with local San dance groups and riel dancers. The performances will touch upon ancestral beliefs, heritage, healing, the role of women, land issues, and modern influences.
Due to the intimate nature of this one-of-a-kind gathering, tickets are limited, and advance booking is highly recommended to ensure a place at this extraordinary event.
The Festival is an opportunity to embrace the true essence of South African heritage through food, music, and dance. Join us in celebrating the diverse and vibrant culture of the San people and experience the magic of a unique partnership with WOMAD.
